Hello again! Sorry it's been so long since my last post. While there was plenty to Explore in Detroit, I have been buried by work and my classes. However, once this event hit my radar, I had to get online and share.
Have you heard of Shakespeare in Detroit (or SID for short)? Well, they are playing their 5th season of free shows in New Center Park this weekend. I went to the Friday opener of Hamlet and had to share the experience.
Unfortunately, pets are not allowed at New Center Park. That didn't stop a few Shakespeare fans from sharing the show with their furry friends. Several chairs were set up outside the gates. While their views may have been obstructed, the dialogue could still be enjoyed. Live and learn.

What do you mean I can't go? How do you say no to this face?!? |
While I understand Hamlet may not be everyone's cup of tea, I truly am happy to have this free show in our fine city. I enjoyed the diverse crowd that was attracted to the show. There was no cost or admission fee to enter the show. I did make a donation in one of the several jars they had available for that purpose. SID is a paid troupe, and I wanted to support the free show I've been able to enjoy the last few years. I haven't been able to attend one of their ticketed events; my work schedule means I miss everything that happens on a weekend.
The stage is set for Hamlet. |
I'm sorry this is the only picture I have of the venue. The cast and crew respectfully requested no photography during the show. I arrived on the late side, which meant I was toward the back of the park. My only advice is not to let the Spartan set up dissuade you from attending a SID show; I've heard nothing but praise for their innovative use of the materials available. They did make the most of their stage!
Please check out SID and support their mission. I subscribed to their email list so I can receive notices of upcoming shows and events. Here's their website! https://www.shakespeareindetroit.com
The Fisher Building |
Hey architecture fans! Explore Detroit has got you covered. Any events hosted at New Center Park are literally in the shadow of one of Albert Kahn Associates Art Deco masterpieces. The address for the Fisher Building is 3011 W Grand Blvd 48202. While I had no problems finding New Center Park on my navigation, I'm providing the address just as a second point of reference.
BYOS! Bring Your Own Seat! |
New Center Park also offers free movies and other events through out the year. The only thing you need to do is bring your chair. New Center Park has a reasonable concessions stand and sells a variety of treats during the show. If you'd like to learn more about New Center Park and their summer offerings, take a trip over to their website: http://www.newcenterpark.com
As always, thanks for taking a look at what I've been up to while I Explore Detroit. Here's to our next adventure.
I have heard of Shakespeare in the park before but never knew where it was. Though this place looks really cool in terms of the stage but also the building around it.
