Hamtramck Disneyland

So, where to start my Explore Detroit adventure? I decided on Hamtramck Disneyland. Hamtramck is a smaller town nestled within the borders of Detroit. Many of the homes are multifamily flats. The area itself is culturally diverse: the familiar sound of church bells along with the Muslim call to prayer remind the faithful it's time to worship. If religion isn't your thing, the restaurant options vary from traditional Polish fare to Pakistani.

Hamtramck Disneyland is in the alley behind 12087 Klinger. The art work spans two garages. I will have to say that I was concerned when I pulled up to the house as there was a construction dumpster parked in front. When I pulled around to the alley, I noticed many of the art pieces had fallen into disrepair. One of the neighbors came out and explained to me that the artist, Dymtro Syzlak, had passed away two years ago. She mentioned an artists group had purchased the houses and had plans to restore the work to its original state (with improvements to the electrical systems).

The friendly neighbor really didn't understand why I was still taking pictures. She pulled up a few shots she had found while doing a Google search. If you want to see Hamtramck Disneyland in it's full glory, you may need to do the same. I took my photos in late May 2017.

Hamtramck Disneyland, while nice to visit, was a very quick trip. The artist didn't plan for his creation to continue after he passed away. As he advanced in age, the care and maintenance of his work suffered. Hopefully, the community group that purchased the two homes can get enough funding together to secure the work so future generations can enjoy.

When I arrived home, I did a search on the Klinger properties. Hatch Art has purchased both homes and has a plan of action for restoring the work to its original glory! Their plans also include renovations of the homes for an artist in residence. Some of the art had fallen from the roof.
